{"id":36694,"date":"2023-11-10T19:27:51","date_gmt":"2023-11-10T18:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bird.bg\/?p=36694"},"modified":"2024-12-28T23:24:11","modified_gmt":"2024-12-28T22:24:11","slug":"narkofiles-bulgaria-arms-drugs-secret-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bird.bg\/en\/narkofiles-bulgaria-arms-drugs-secret-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Drug Files: Weapons, Drugs and State Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hans Agredo Caballero<\/strong> and his father, <strong>Humberto Agredo Espitia<\/strong> , are wanted by the Colombian authorities for <strong>the illegal import<\/strong> into the country of at least <strong>11,000 Bulgarian AK 47 assault rifles<\/strong>, as well as for <strong>the export of 1,100 kg of cocaine<\/strong> from Colombia to Mexico. They are considered to be leading figures in the illegal paramilitary formations. In Bulgaria, the Colombians had business relations with companies associated with <strong>Petar Mandjoukov<\/strong>, were close to the &#8220;<strong>pope<\/strong>&#8221; <strong>of organized crime Ivo Karamanski<\/strong>, and a former deputy head of the State Security (counterintelligence) became Humberto&#8217;s father-in-law and Hans&#8217;s brother-in-law. Arms exports are shaped like parts for machine tools or fertilizers. This was shown by a study by BIRD within the framework of the international <a href=\"https:\/\/bird.bg\/narcofiles-the-highway-to-europe\/\"><b>project NarcoFiles<\/b><\/a>, in which 40 media from 23 countries participated.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journalists from the project gained access to terabytes of information leaked by the Colombian prosecutor&#8217;s office. Their study outlines the new criminal world order, in which the bargaining chip is powdered &#8211; cocaine. The most detailed &#8220;Bulgarian trace&#8221; in <a href=\"https:\/\/bird.bg\/narcofiles-the-highway-to-europe\/\"><b>NarcoFiles<\/b><\/a> are the weapons intended for the United Self-Defense Forces (AUC), declared by Colombia a &#8220;criminal alliance of private armies&#8221;,    <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/verdadabierta.com\/las-auc-fueron-una-alianza-criminal-de-ejercitos-privados\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Carlos Casta\u00f1o Hill.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Divorce due to irretrievable disorder<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A brief announcement in the Official Gazette of 2013 notified <strong>Hans Agredo Caballero<\/strong>, a citizen of the Republic of Colombia, of the termination of the civil marriage concluded between him and his wife due to a profound and irreparable disorder (gr.d. No. 24662\/2012 according to the inventory of the Special Surveillance Devices\/. Behind the modest ad, however, hides a whole saga of <strong>drugs<\/strong>, <strong>murders<\/strong>, <strong>arms smuggling<\/strong> and kinship with the Bulgarian <strong>State Security<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The father of Hans Agredo&#8217;s ex-wife is none other than anyone.  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Nikolay Ivanov Kodjeikov<\/strong> is Head of the &#8220;Greek&#8221; Department at the Second Main Directorate of the State Security.<br \/>\nAfter November 10, at the beginning of the transition, counterintelligence was merged into the National Service for the Protection of the Constitution, and Nikolay Kodzheikov became Deputy Director of the Service. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nikolay Kodjeikov leaves this world in 2022 at the age of almost 80 years.<br \/>\nBut his former girlfriend, <strong>Umberto Agredo Espitia,<\/strong> is alive and well in Florida, where he lives modestly as a gas station manager.<br \/>\nModest, because in the past he lived on a wide footing, flying between Bulgaria and Colombia ostensibly for a business with machine tools and bananas, but in fact as an international trafficker of arms and cocaine.<br \/>\nEspitia is said to have redeemed himself for his past sins by becoming an informant for the DEA, but the Colombian prosecutor&#8217;s office continues to investigate and search for him.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to investigators in Bogot\u00e1, Hans Agredo Caballero and Umberto Agredo Espitia are the main &#8220;suppliers&#8221; of arms of the <strong>Carlos Casta\u00f1o Hill<\/strong> group &#8220;Colombian Self-Defense Unit&#8221; (AUC) and are considered very close to him.<br \/>\nWhen AUC negotiated with the government after 2004, Umberto Agredo Espitia was among the negotiators.<br \/>\nSeveral of the AUC members argued to prosecutors that Umberto Agredo had a leading role in the organization in the recent years Carlos Casta\u00f1o led it.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to witness statements, Agredo was involved in <strong>the smuggling of Bulgarian weapons<\/strong> in 1999 and 2000, through Buenaventura in Colombia were &#8220;delivered&#8221; 7,640 assault rifles, another 4,200 through another port.<br \/>\nThey are produced by Arsenal-Kazanlak and are of the AK-47 type under a caliber of 5.56 NATO.<br \/>\nThe weapon was ordered by paramilitary leader Carlos Casta\u00f1o-Hill and was reportedly disbursed with cocaine because that was the practice of AUC.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2006, the Bogot\u00e1 court ruled that there was insufficient evidence against the two Agredos.<br \/>\nTwelve years later, another panel of judges revised the 2006 ruling, charged the men, issued a warrant for their detention and filed a report with the Colombian prosecutor&#8217;s anti-corruption unit against the first judicial panel that ruled on their case.<br \/>\nThe convicted Jorge Ernesto Rojas Galindo testified several times about the role of Umberto Agredo Espitia and confirmed that he was the organizer of the traffic on behalf of Carlos Casta\u00f1o &#8211; Hill.  <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were three documents that were the same and all were signed by Captain Orlando Martinez.<br \/>\nWith these three documents, the arms were listed in the name of my company, and Mr. Agredo introduced them.<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t tell you how many weapons, but guns were imported  <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The carbines that enter through the port of Buenaventura were imported three times.<br \/>\nThe first shipment was sent on June 3, 1999 from the port of Varna in two containers weighing 13,820 kg. It has 640 rifles.<br \/>\nObviously, there are other contents in the shipment, because these carbines, even packed in chests, can not reach this weight.<br \/>\nIn Buenaventura, the cargo is serviced by the company &#8220;Equipos y Repuestos Limitada&#8221; owned by Jorge Ernesto Rojas Galindo.<br \/>\nAt that time the receiver company, according to      <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semana.com\/armas-fachada\/51484-3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Semana Edition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has entered into a contract with Arsenal to represent him at a military exhibition in Bogot\u00e1.<br \/>\nIn fact, the exhibition becomes a formal occasion for the import of weapons and spare parts for it, but with forged documents, witnesses say. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colombian media report that at the exhibition Arsena was represented by Petko Apostolov Vakov, for whom we find evidence that until 2007 he was on the management board of Arsenal, but today he is presented as Head of Engineering at Arsenal AD. According to  <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semana.com\/armas-fachada\/51484-3\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semana<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Vakov was in the company of Umberto Agredo while in Bogot\u00e1. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second part of the assault rifles, about 7,000 units, reached Colombia in two containers.<br \/>\nThe weapons came to the motor ship NEDLLOY D CLEMENT V. 007 SB in containers weighing 30,219 kg. The shipment was released on January 28, 2000 by the same company, Equipos y Repuestos Limitada. <strong>The cargo was declared as containers with lathes, but inside there were disassembled AK-47s.<\/strong> For the machine tools, it is indicated that they are supplied by   <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/intermachinex.bg\/\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intermashinex <\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Bulgaria at &#8220;Equipos y Repuestos Limitada&#8221; &#8211; Colombia. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a third shipment of 4,200 assault rifles from Bulgaria in 2001, according to the testimony of Raul Emilio Hasbum Mendoza, another witness of the prosecution, &#8220;The operation&#8221; was again carried out by Umberto Agredo, but not through the port of Buenaventura, but through the port of Necoccoli.<br \/>\nThe shipment was again ordered by Carlos Castagno.<br \/>\nMendoza testified that the purchase and forwarding of the weapon was realized through false letters and permissions from the Colombian government.<br \/>\nThe weapons come in disguised as a shipment of artificial manure.<br \/>\nThe cargo was cleared by customs authorities in Colombia, with the help of lawyer Hubert Duque, who accidentally or not, a year later was shot in the city of Medell\u00edn.      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our team followed the tracks of these shipments from Bulgaria and managed to contact some of Agredo&#8217;s Bulgarian partners.  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their version is different from that of Colombian investigators.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lathes for the Colombian Church<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company &#8220;Intermashinex&#8221; was established in 1992 by Hans Agredo Caballero, Umberto Agredo Espitia and Elka Simeonova Ivanova in Pernik under the name &#8220;Hans and Bulat &#8211; Ltd.&#8221;<br \/>\nWho Hans is is clear, but there is no information about the partner with the Caucasian name Bulat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1993, the Agredo family&#8217;s share in <\/span> the <a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=121072032\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a> was <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> transferred to Antonio Ivanov Ivanov, who initially worked in partnership with Elka Simeonova Ivanova, who was his mother. <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1999 &#8211; 2000, when the shipment of weapons was realized, the company &#8220;Intermachinex&#8221; was owned by Antonio Ivanov Ivanov, who claimed that at that time he had no trade relations with partners from Colombia.<br \/>\nAntonio Ivanov proved to be key to unraveling the Bulgarian connection in this history, which began during socialism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1986 Antonio Ivanov Ivanov, today the owner <\/span> of <a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=121072032\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inter-Machinex Ltd., <\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was seconded to Colombia as a representative of the then state-owned company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=000627654\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mashinoexport<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the spot, Ivanov has to deal with many problems. Colombian contractors owe serious sums to the enterprise, and as early as the early 1980s, about 30 Bulgarian lathes were confiscated by the customs authorities in Colombia because they were declared as spare parts and not as whole machines.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1980s, Umberto Agredo specialized in customs clearance and had a company Reyfer, which is engaged in the supply of spare parts and tools.<br \/>\nHe connects Antonio Ivanov with the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Center for Vocational Training Don Bosco.<br \/>\nThe director there is Francisco Pope.<br \/>\nBoth Francisco and Umberto arranged for the detained machines to be donated to the church by customs, and Umberto arranged for the machines to be paid to Masoexport.     <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 1991 Antonio Ivanov returned to Bulgaria.<br \/>\nUmberto Agredo asked him to enroll his son in a specialty in international economic relations at the UNWE.<br \/>\nHans Agredo lived in Bulgaria permanently, and Umberto skipped to Bulgaria for several years.<br \/>\nThe Colombians opened two companies \u2013 Pettum and Hans and Bulat.<br \/>\nIn one they partner Antonio Ivanov&#8217;s mother and in the other associate professor      <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=d54bc78e6dcba490008fb003f4fd6f763358120a72aec844ed23aad897b6686f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perkan Iliev<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was a leading lecturer in the education of the International Economic Relations at that time, but he also started his own business ventures. Hans Agredo already speaks good Bulgarian and the three started a joint project. In front of Associate Professor Iliev Umberto Agredo presented himself as part of the team of Masoexport to Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia. Pettum exports machine tools to Colombia, including cutters manufactured by Arsenal. In the words of Assoc. Iliev Umberto Agredo tried to maintain the Bulgarian machines and supply them with parts. It is a strange coincidence that Intermashinex, as renamed &#8220;Hans and Bulat&#8221;, has identical activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karamanski, Mandjoukov and bananas<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petkan Iliev says that while working with Umberto Agredo, he was in very warm relations with <strong>the &#8220;Pope<\/strong>&#8221; <strong>of Bulgarian organized crime<\/strong> <strong>Ivo Karamanski<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAfter his death in 1998, only Hans remained in Bulgaria, and Umberto for unknown reasons returned to Colombia urgently.<br \/>\nThis raises suspicions in Petkan Iliev that his Colombian partner is involved in drug trafficking.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether Agredo and Karamanski had a &#8220;business&#8221; relationship for the time being is unclear.<br \/>\nIt is a fact, however, that the rower was among the emblematic names of organised crime in the 1990s.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Colombian investigators quite categorically accuse Umberto Agredo  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for exports per 1 100 kg. cocaine from Colombia to Mexico.<br \/>\nAccording to witnesses of the prosecution, this was at least partially paid for the arms shipment from Bulgaria, because this was the practice of AUC.<br \/>\nConvicted Jorge Ernesto Rojas Galindo testified several times about the role of Umberto Agredo Espitia and confirmed that he was the organizer of arms trafficking ordered by Carlos Castagno.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umberto Agredo is also suspected of illegal arms imports from Russia and the United States, but no evidence has been collected for these cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, relations between Umberto Agredo and Antonio Ivanov are strained.<br \/>\nWhile Ivanov was Colombia to look for new markets, Agredo became a representative of the rival ZMM Sofia.<br \/>\nAfter meeting with    <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=ab806cc6a7d7f01412579b243bfbec7111bca08f296d3eeb43cf1f8b4dcea1cc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Todor Stankov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  Agredo decided to export their products to Colombia.<br \/>\nThis fact is confirmed by Stankov himself.<br \/>\nFor about 2 years Agredo managed to export over 20 lathes produced by ZMM Sofia, as well as two digital machines.<br \/>\nThe man managed to hire a whole team of technicians and engineers from Bulgaria to implement the machines in Colombia and train the staff there.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=000620147\"><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ZMM AD<\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  The names of the Mandjoukov family and in particular the arms dealer <strong>Petar Mandjoukov<\/strong> stand out.<br \/>\nAt a time when Alberto Agredo was a representative of the company in Latin America, Mandjoukov was not part of the management of ZMM Sofia, but before that he was, as he was associated with Intermachinex.<br \/>\nIn practice, the industrialist is connected to both state-owned enterprises with which Agredo has trade relations.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When in 1999 part of the AK assault rifles were imported in containers with lathes in Colombia, Agrido declared that the cargo was produced by Intermashinex, a claim that Antonio Ivanov categorically denies.<br \/>\nZMM AD, the successor of ZMM Sofia, denied that they had exported machines to Latin America at that time.<br \/>\nThere is no evidence that the machines have been examined to determine who their manufacturer is.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, Ivanov recalls that Agredo&#8217;s business plans were not limited to the trade in machine tools.<br \/>\nThe Colombian tried to import bananas into Bulgaria.<br \/>\nAs <a href=\"https:\/\/irpimedia.irpi.eu\/narcofiles-banacol-banane-colombia-narcotraffico\/\">an investigation by our Italian partner IRPI<\/a> revealed, paramilitary organizations in Colombia control banana plantations as part of the organization of large-scale cocaine trafficking to Europe in shipments of the popular exotic fruit.<br \/>\nTonnes of cocaine were seized only this year in banana shipments to Spain and Belgium.<br \/>\nCocaine bananas have also reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnes.bg\/index\/2019\/08\/17\/otkriha-75-kg-kokain-v-20-hiliadi-kashona-s-banani-v-burgas.419984\">Bulgaria<\/a>, but in smaller quantities.    <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no evidence in the Drug Files of Umberto Agredo&#8217;s involvement in direct drug trafficking to Bulgaria.<br \/>\nAnd that&#8217;s logical.<br \/>\nIn Bulgaria, the wholesale price of AK-47 carbines is $ 140-150 per piece.<br \/>\nThis means that for them &#8220;Arsenal&#8221; received about $ 1,600,000 -1,700,000.<br \/>\nIn Colombia, however, such a weapon, witnesses said, traded for more than $1,000 per piece, or at least $11 million for 11,000 assault rifles.<br \/>\nNaturally, this price includes the cost of transportation and those of corruption.<br \/>\nBut even after deduction of all expenses, Agredo&#8217;s deal remains extremely profitable and without taking the risk of becoming involved in cocaine trafficking to Bulgaria.      <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not a father-in-law, but a mother-in-law.<br \/>\nFrom the services <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Convicted for trafficking in arms owner of &#8220;Equipos y Repuestos Limitada&#8221; Jorge Ernesto Rojas Galindo lays out curious data about Umberto Agredo.<br \/>\nReveals that his relationship with Carlos Casta\u00f1o-Hill goes through another AUC leader, Salvatore Mancuso.<br \/>\nAgredo told Galindo that he could handle delivering many rifles from Bulgaria because his son&#8217;s father-in-law was the director of the Arsenal plant.<br \/>\nThen the captain connected him with Mancuso, and he with Castagno.     <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umberto was responsible for receiving the weapons that were purchased by a member of his family and his father-in-law.<br \/>\nHe paid for that merchandise there.<br \/>\nHe took four trips that he had to make with money he received from Carlos Castagno.    <strong>His father-in-law knew perfectly well that these weapons came for self-defense groups.<\/strong><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information about family ties with an Arsenal manager who was a relative of Agredo is also found in other testimony from other demilitarized AUC members.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colombian investigators, however, have no idea who Umberto&#8217;s father-in-law is, pointing to almost the entire Arsenal leadership as trafficked.<br \/>\nIn 1999 the company still had a strong state involvement.<br \/>\nPersonally in the court papers are indicated today&#8217;s majority owners of &#8220;Arsenal&#8221;    <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=f34e7cc3231851a8eed2ea9a700b5fc73b640d928d948548d3869a619482f6be\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nikolay Hristov<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a> Ibushev, <a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=831041a601ea82ea6ed6cae55f8f38e17b0c22bf2304604885840418814a9bbc&amp;p2=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hristo Nilolaev Ibushev<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=5825a9e4c3c597fff445cf6b63b3a583e54dbb09e8fb7c9b9d38b166d9f2064c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanil Mihalev Stanilov<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the lawyer, former Deputy Minister of Justice and shareholder in Arsenal 2000 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=4e06303474426e3dd45881d374459407cf863a2cf852898e4e4fb958de49190c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dragia Zhelyazkov<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dragiev and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scan.bird.bg\/tr\/?v=view&amp;guid=36445e3bf3a49d97d5904a856aab7a77be83c78aa52139e313d08f6ec8f9a286\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dimitar Todorov Gramatikov<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Colombian authorities point out that these are Bulgarian citizens on board Arsenal AD.
