Bulgarian Interior Ministry adviser\u00a0Plamen Stoilov Ferdov<\/strong>\u00a0has worked for the Communist secret services known as the State Security (DS) and has had a joint business with Insa Oil owner\u00a0Georgi Samuilov<\/strong>, who is said to be close to controversial lawmaker, oligarch and former media mogul\u00a0Delyan Peevski<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In early January, BIRD published\u00a0an investigation\u00a0<\/a>into the lobbying agreements of United States (US) lobbyist\u00a0Anthony Podesta with Bulgarian businessmen linked to Peevski<\/strong>\u00a0 who is sanctioned by the US under the global \u00a0Magnitsky Act.\u00a0One of the contracts is with Georgi Samuilov’s company.\u00a0Another USD 1.2 million contract has been signed with Veliko Zhelev of Hydrostroy.\u00a0This agreement has\u00a0not been declared<\/strong>\u00a0in accordance with the requirements of the US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).\u00a0Apart from that, Podesta has a contract with arms trader Kiril Klenovski for lobbying in Riyadh and has opened a joint venture with the infamous lawyer Momchil Mondeshki, which indicates long-lasting interests in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n

In June 2021, the US Department of the Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)\u00a0sanctioned<\/a>\u00a0Peevski under the Magnitsky Act for his extensive role in corruption in Bulgaria. The State Department also\u00a0publicly designated\u00a0<\/a>Peevski as a person involved in corruption.<\/p>\n

Asked by a BIRD reporter by phone if he had a connection with Peevski, Samuilov said he had never met him, did not know him personally and had nothing to do with the company that bought the oligarch\u2019s property.<\/p>\n

During work on the investigation into Podesta’s contracts, BIRD editor-in-chief\u00a0Atanas Tchobanov<\/strong>\u00a0received information from the US embassy in Bulgaria about an “imminent threat” to his health and life.\u00a0He informed the National Security Agency (DANS) and personally Prime Minister Kiril Petkov about the threat. Petkov ordered the secret services to check the information and neutralize the danger.<\/p>\n

So far there are no results from the actions of these institutions, while the presence of a person with the biography of Plamen Ferdov in the close circle of the Interior Minister is rather a negative for such an investigation.<\/p>\n

Change advised by State Security?<\/p>\n

A few years ago, the investigative news site Bivol\u00a0found<\/a>\u00a0that the closest person to Peevski, attorney Alexander Angelov<\/strong>\u00a0is the son of\u00a0Paraskev Paraskevov<\/strong>, a high-ranking State Security officer.\u00a0It was Paraskevov who signed Peevski’s contracts with the lobbying company BGR Public Relations in the US.\u00a0Another lawyer close to Peevski is\u00a0Geno Andreev<\/strong>, son of the late Colonel\u00a0Rumen Andreev<\/strong>, also a prominent officer of the State Security.<\/p>\n
